Title: Stewardship Minute: Deacons' Report
Date: November 18, 2005
Details: Stewardship Minute: Deacons' Report

Now during those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. (2) And Pastor Cal and the elders called together the whole community of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables. (3) Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves nine of good standing, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, (4) while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word.’ (5) What they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Kimball Wong, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Lianne Leong, Pamela Jang, Amoena Quan, Jean Chin, Wayne Eng, Richard Jann and Joe Tanizawa. (6) They had these men and women stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. (7) The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples increased greatly in Chinatown, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

From the Book of Order:

The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service anter the example of Jesus Christ.

It is the duty of deacons, first of all., to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.  They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord’s Supper.

The deacons serve the worshipping community so that the pastor and elders may lead the church.

The deacons are assigned the following duties.

Kimball Wong: Chairman of Deacons
Liane Leong: Mission and Evangelism
Pamela Jang: Secretary and Prayer List
Wayne Eng: Annoucements and Special Events
Clinton Huey:   Readers
Richard Jann: Guest Book
Amoena Quan: Tea Time
Jean Chin: Communion Elements and Flowers
Joe Tanizawa: Ushers, Resource Committee
