2 Peter 3:1-10
by Diane Go
In this passage, Peter begs his friends not to forget the teachings of all the prophets and Jesus as well. He begs his readers to remain true to God’s commandments. He reminds them not succumb to their selfish ways because they think that they won’t have to account for themselves at Jesus’ second coming in the distant future.
In verse 9, Peter comments that God will fulfill his promises to us. God is just giving us time to better ourselves, to truly understand all that we have been taught by Jesus. According to Peter, God wants us to be successful at having a Christ-centered life.
That’s easier said than done, isn’t it? It’s easier not to commit to one more meeting or another term as deacon or daily prayer time with God. It’s easier to plop down in front of the TV for an episode of CSI instead of figuring out a church school lesson—or writing these devotions for Advent. It seems too hard sometimes to share one’s faith with those who don’t know God.
But, somehow, all those disciples, prophets, Sunday School teachers, pastors and fellow Christians managed to put a little voice inside of each one of us to nag and poke and pluck at our heart strings. The voice says, “Come on. You know what Jesus would do! So just do it! No more excuses!”
So what are you waiting for?
Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for being so patient with me, for always loving me when I don’t really try to be all that you know I can be. Please give me some of that same patience to hang in there, to keep focused, and to be willing to share the joy of knowing you with others. Amen.
