Luke 1:57-66
by Marie Chin
He knows when you are sleeping,
He knows when you’re awake,
He knows if you’ve been bad or good,
So be good for goodness’ sake.
As in the song, God knows all our moves, regardless of whether we are awake or sleeping.
The other two possible readings for this day (2 Thessalonians 1:5-12 [ read it ] and Amos 6:1-14 [ read it ] ) talk about how God takes vengeance on us if we don’t know God and if we don’t obey what our Lord Jesus tells us. On the other hand, if we are in favor in God’s eyes, the gospel reading from Luke tells us that we will be rewarded, just like Elizabeth and Mary.
Elizabeth was longing for a child, and she knew that she was too old to bear children, but God found favor with Elizabeth and blessed her with a son. And God also found favor with Mary, and she bore the Christ Child. If God finds favor with us, he will bless us also.
So be good for goodness’ sake.
Prayer
Lord, as we prepare for this holy season, we pray that you will help us to keep our focus on you. Let us know what we re doing when we are awake, and when we are sleeping, let us contemplate what we have done that day. Amen.
