Daily Devotions for the Advent and Christmas Seasons

Luke 1:26-38

by Pat Chan

As a young girl attending the Baptist church I remembered this passage during the Christmas season. I always thought, “How can it be possible that Mary is with child when she is not even married to Joseph.”

The angel tells Mary, “You will bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”

Mary is probably thinking, “Why me, God?” but she says, “How can this be since I am a virgin.” And how could it be possible for Elizabeth who was old to conceive a son?

The angel tells Mary that God chose them, these two special women, a younger and a older woman, and “nothing will be impossible with God.”

If it’s meant to be, then I think God will answer our prayers. We should not give up and keep praying, for God will know whether to grant what we are wanting or wishing, just as in the case of Elizabeth and Zechariah. They were blessed with a child. God knew that they would be good parents.

Prayer

Dear God, sometimes we are afraid to ask for something that we really want. We should not be afraid to ask. Please help us to have more faith in you. Amen.
