John 13:31-35
by Jean Chin
In this passage, Jesus’ main message to his disciples is for them to love one another and to care for each other just as he had loved them.
Reading this passage reminded me of when I was very young and my mother told my sister, my brother, and me that if we loved our mother and father, we should also love each other and help each other and be loyal to each other. She said that this was not only for our own good but also for our father and her because if we loved and helped each other, they would not have to worry about us as much. And it comforted their hearts to see their children be good to each other.
The passage also reminded me of a classmate I had in grammar school. She had a younger sister whom she loved so much that she was always looking out for her. She called her sister Honey and often asked whether she was alright. It was wonderful that they loved each like that, and I thought that their mother must be a very loving mom, too.
If all the people in the world would only feel this way about each other, there would be no wars.
Prayer
Loving God, help us to learn to love and care for each other. Show us how to share everything that you have provided for us. All that we have is from you, so we should not be selfish or be extravagant just for ourselves. We thank you for our daily bread. May all your children be provided with their daily bread. Amen.
