Daily Devotions for the Advent and Christmas Seasons
Wednesday, January 6, Epiphany
Matthew 2: 1-12
by Ed Kam
When the three wise men saw the star stop over the place where Jesus was and thy knew they had found the Christ, they were overwhelmed with joy. That revelation of Jesus to the wise men is the Epiphany we celebrate today.
In our Wednesday fellowship group, Terry Chan asked us, “Even though there were little signs along the way, when did you finally realize that God had a certain purpose for you?” For many of us, our commitment to serve Christ evolved subtly or in stages. There wasn’t a single dramatic conversion experience, but our Christian faith grew and evolved as our theology was shared and challenged or as we experienced personal crises. God is always there. We just have to be open to let him finally reveal how we’re a part of his ministry in this world, and then we can rejoice and share the joy of that epiphany with others.
Today we are at the culmination of the Advent and Christmas seasons when we celebrate the birth of Christ and all the times over the years when Christ has come into our lives. This is a good time to think about what have been the epiphanies that have shaped your life as a Christian.
What revelations have further affirmed your belief in God or helped you respond to God’s call to ministry in this world? What experiences have brought you joy and fulfillment because you could see somehow that Christ was integral to the experience? Have there been times when you could finally connect the dots in your faith?
If you can remember two to three pivotal times, those are the epiphanies in your personal Christian journey. Celebrate them today, too, along with that first Epiphany of the wise men.
Prayer
Lord God, the wise men rejoiced when they knew the prophesies had been fulfilled with the coming of the Messiah. Lord Jesus Christ, in that Epiphany you were made known to humankind. We rejoice, too, and give thanks for the many saints past, present, and future who helped or will help to reveal your love to each and every one of us. Amen.
